Midsummer
When dawn comes early and dusk comes late, it seems like there is all the time in the world to do, or not do, stuff. Time for strawberries, of course, a clinking glass of elderflower cordial, to admire a single bloom or go looking for ladybirds. Embrace walking and talking and snoozing. It means taking time to live well, time to enjoy the simple things.
Summer nights demand you stay up late with the turning point of the year being a good moment to make plans, knowing the lazy days of summer will be around for a while before you need to get on with them.
So, stringing up lanterns in a sheltered corner and lay on drinks and nibbles for an informal social distancing party for family. Whether you have an afternoon tea in the garden, a basic barbeque or just a simple drink in the garden listening the world as it goes to sleep. Why not celebrate summer - dress up a little and enjoy a light, summary menu.
Why not look around your garden for a few aromatic plants and you will have some ingredients to mix for a summary cocktail. Why not try a little gin with cucumber & mint, or raspberries and a little sugar with gin (can you tell I like gin). Maybe try a blackcurrant cordial with ice, sparkling water and pomegranate seeds or a raspberry cordial with ice, sparking water and add some frozen berries.
From finger sandwiches, cream laden cakes or a scone or two, burgers, grilled chicken and the all-important potato salad, or cocktails - make it memorable and give yourself time to take a break and breath.
Take some time to reflect on yourself and those around you. This time has pushed people to breaking point and others it has brought them closer together. As our worlds gets busier and our lives get fuller take time to reflect on what you have taken from the last few months and what would you like to keep and what would you like to leave behind.
There are no wrong turns, just unexpected paths and interesting journeys.
